Napoleon L. Nazareno

President and CEO, Smart Communications Inc.

Mr Nazareno is President and CEO of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), and its subsidiary, Smart Communications Inc. (SMART); also President and CEO of the Pilipino Telephone Corp. (Piltel), SMART's mobile phone service subsidiary.

His experience spans several countries in over 30 years across a broad range of industries including: packaging, bottling, petrochemicals, real estate and in the last decade, telecommunications and information technology. Obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, he completed his Master in Business Management followed by the INSEAD Executive Program in Fountainbleau, France in 1983.

As Marketing Manager with Akerlund & Rausing, Sweden, his management expertise escalated him to CEO in the Philippines where he was twice cited as Manager of the Year of the Akerlund & Rausing Group Worldwide (which then became a subsidiary of Metro Pacific Corp., now AR Packaging Corp), where he held the positions of President and CEO until 1999.

Entering the telecommunications industry in 1998 as President and CEO of Piltel (a cellular affiliate of PLDT), Mr Nazareno was instrumental in restructuring them out of one of the largest debts in the country. He continues to head Piltel, now a subsidiary of SMART.

Continuing his path of excellence, as President and CEO of SMART in January 2000, 58% market share gain in subscriber base, becoming the most profitable telecom firm in the process. SMART has won global recognition innovative products and services - Smart Money and Smart Load - and Best Employer in the Philippines in 2003.

In 2004 and 2005, Mr Nazareno was voted Corporate Executive of the Year in the Philippines (PLDT and SMART) at the Best-Managed Companies and Corporate Governance Polls conducted by Asiamoney, one of Asia's most influential magazines. Asiamoney also cited PLDT/SMART as Best Managed Company in the Philippines in 2004 and 2005 and Mr. Nazareno as the Best CEO in the Philippines in 2005.

• Member of the Board of Trustees of Asian Institute of Management.
