Accenture Development Partnerships
Accenture Development Parnerships was established to channel Accenture’s vast expertise and business knowledge to the development sector using a not-for-profit model that is affordable, scalable and sustainable. ADP and B4MD work together to create opportunities that leverage each other’s networks. In the case of ADP, this involves connecting B4MD with Accenture corporate clients with the ability to assist with B4MD projects. In the case of B4MD, this involves connecting ADP to B4MD events, workshops and projects. A recent example of this collaborative work is the symposium hosted at Melbourne Business School on cross-sectoral collaboration entitled “Three Sectors. One Vision”
Agility
Agility Logistics has been a member of B4MD since 2008. B4MD has worked closely with Agility in Papua New Guinea to harness their logistics capacity to build effective and efficient supply chains for poor communities. In particular, B4MD works with Agility on agricultural supply chains. Agility have been deeply involved in design, feasibility and business planning around B4MD’s two flagship projects in Papua New Guinea, Hailens Fresh Produce and Seabreeze Poultry.
BHP Billiton
BHP Billiton has partnered with B4MD on several major events over the past four years. The relationship started with the 2008 Business for Millennium Development Summit in Melbourne. The event was co-hosted with the United Nations Development Programme. B4MD highlighted the work BHP Billiton had undertaken in Mozambique under the “Mozlink” program. In 2010, B4MD once again partnered with BHP Billiton to host Nobel Peace Laureate Mohammed Yunus in Australia. This included a workshop for BHP Billiton staff with Yunus. This year, B4MD and BHP Billiton will once again partner around the Creating Shared Value global business leader event in October 2011.
Coffey International Development
Coffey International have partnered with B4MD since 2010 to promote inclusive business to the private sector. This has largely centred on major events and workshops undertaken by B4MD such as the 2010 Power of Small campaign and the 2011 Creating Shared Value campaign.
George Weston Foods
George Weston Foods have partnered with B4MD to undertake a feasibility study focused on a cocoa supply chain enterprise which will build local capacity of cocoa farmers in Papua New Guinea connecting them with GWF’s procurement supply chain.
GoodmanFielder
Goodman Fielder are working closely with B4MD on two flagship business enterprises in Papua New Guinea - Hailens Fresh Produce and Seabreeze Poultry. Both enterprises have been catalyzed, coordinated and co-created by B4MD together with private sector partners led by Goodman Fielder. GF have a world-leading outgrower model of poultry production in the Pacific which has been replicated by the World Bank and other partners in Africa and around the world. B4MD is harnessing GF’s considerable expertise in poultry production to design an integrated value chain solution for poor communities in Papua New Guinea.
IBM
IBM is a founding member of B4MD. In 2008, IBM co-designed an MDG impact assessment tool with B4MD and KPMG. The tool is used to assist companies assessing their baseline impact against the Millennium Development Goals and to monitor progress in their contributions to the MDGs. IBM have partnered with B4MD in bringing Nobel Peace Laureate Mohammed Yunus to Australia in 2010 and will be a Platinum Sponsor of B4MD’s 2011 major event, Creating Shared Value.
National Australia Bank
National Australia Bank were Platinum Sponsor of the 2010 visit to Australia of Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Mohammed Yunus. B4MD have worked closely with NAB on their microfinance operations. The 2011 Creating Shared Value Summit will be held at NAB’s head office in Docklands, Melbourne.
Nestlé
Nestle have been a corporate member of B4MD since 2009. Nestle were part of the 2009 inclusive business mission to the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, hosted by OilSearch. More recently, B4MD has been exploring project opportunities in India (creating shared value for landless dairy farmers in terms of yields and market access) and Papua New Guinea (cocoa production).
Newcrest Mining
Newcrest and B4MD have recently partnered to explore inclusive business opportunities surrounding the Morobe Mining Joint Ventures (MMJV) in Papua New Guinea. Newcrest has hosted a delegation from B4MD who scoped the potential to build robust cocoa supply chains in the Morobe Province. B4MD and MMJV will shortly host a delegation of leading researchers and companies involved in chocolate production to design inclusive business solutions to poverty for smallholder farmers.
Nufarm
Nufarm have recently joined B4MD as a corporate member. B4MD and Nufarm are working together on a project concept to create “farmers kits” which bundle essential farming inputs together (seed, fertilizer, crop protection) to enable farmers at the Base of the Economic Pyramid to dramatically increased yields. Three-quarters of the world’s poor are smallholder agricultural producers who are often held in a poverty trap because of lack of access to skills, products, technologies and markets which can unleash their farming potential.
Oil Search Ltd
OilSearch have a comprehensive partnership program with B4MD which is purposed on connecting the private sector with grassroots Papua New Guinea. This program is currently facilitating agribusiness, healthcare and gender empowerment projects. The flagship project under this partnership is called Hailens Fresh Produce (HFP). HFP is being implemented in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. It connects women in multiple villages throughout the Highlands with regional markets centering on egg production. The project is a social inclusive business enterprise. This means that the women producers are shareholders in a joint venture with a large Australian company. The joint venture has a specific and focused social mission to achieve the MDGs for the partner communities. It will also create a long term sustainable business for the partner company.
Rio Tinto
Rio Tinto recently engaged B4MD to present at a workshop at their 2011 Communities Forum. B4MD gave Rio Tinto staff an overview of the global inclusive business movement and then contextualized that movement in terms of Rio Tinto operations in Australia and abroad. B4MD is currently following up a number of co-created project leads both within Australia and overseas with Rio Tinto site managers. Since 2009, Rio Tinto have a corporate policy which states that “all operations to have locally appropriate, publicly reported social performance indicators that demonstrate a positive contribution to the economic development of the communities and regions where we work, consistent with the Millennium Development Goals, by 2013”. B4MD fully supports the strategic direction in which Rio Tinto are taking their operations and we are working to assist Rio Tinto to achieve this objective by 2013.
Telstra Corporation
Telstra became a B4MD member in late 2010. B4MD are currently scoping a number of opportunities with Telstra to create linkages between their core business and aboriginal communities in Australia. The projects mainly focus on how to harness the capacity of mobile telecommunications services to economically empower remote indigenous communities. These projects are envisaged as being embedded within Telstra’s core business while maintaining a clear social mission.
The Body Shop
B4MD specialise in business development in frontier communities. The Body Shop sends staff into the Pacific to assist micro-entrepreneurs in building their businesses. To help their staff prepare, B4MD presents training in development methodologies, barriers to business growth in developing contexts and effective micro-credit models. This helps ensure that The Body Shop team have the greatest impact on micro-entrepreneurs they visit.
Visy
Visy were the pioneer of B4MD. In 2006, together with world vision australia, Visy helped to bring into being Business for Poverty Relief Alliance, the precursor to B4MD. Since b4md was formed in 2007, Visy has actively participated in several b4md initiatives such as the 2009 inclusive business mission to Papua New Guinea. The PNG mission has matured into a large business collaboration with Amalpack, Visy's joint venture company in PNG. Visy has also worked with b4md on efforts to create low cost micronutrient water pouches for the poor through connecting us with Visy offshoot company VIP Packaging.
